Hello, and welcome to the Castle Hills Chiropractic wellness minute. I’m Dr. Brent Johnson.

School is right around the corner, that means new schedules, backpacks, hours at desks, and rushing between classes. And while it’s an exciting time, it’s also one when spinal health can take a hit. Heavy backpacks, slouching over tablets, and long periods sitting can lead to neck, shoulder, and back pain before the first bell even rings.

Here’s the good news: a few simple adjustments can make a big difference.

First, lighten the load. Choose a backpack with padded straps and wide support—wear both straps, and keep your heaviest items close to your back. If the pack exceeds 10–15 % of your child’s body weight, consider a rolling option or a second bag.

Second, posture matters. Whether you’re at a desk or on a couch, upright posture helps spinal alignment. Sit with both feet flat, shoulders relaxed, and hold books at eye level when possible.

Third, micro‑movement is powerful. Every 30 minutes, stand up, stretch your arms overhead, roll your shoulders, or walk in place. These simple breaks boost circulation and ease spinal tension.

If soreness starts to creep in, neck tightness, upper‑back pain, or mid‑day shoulder strain, don’t wait it out. Chiropractic adjustments, targeted stretches, and personalized posture strategies can help address issues before they become chronic.

This school year, let’s support healthy habits, from lightening backpacks to mindful sitting and regular movement. Your spine will thank you.
