Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Brent Johnson with Castle Hills Chiropractic here in Castle Hills, Texas, and today we’re talking about something that affects just about everyone at some point in their life. Back pain. Specifically, how you can prevent it with some simple habits you can start doing today. Because here’s the thing, most back pain doesn’t come out of nowhere. It builds up slowly, over weeks and months, from the little things we do every single day.

So let’s dig in.

Now, one of the biggest contributors to back pain that I see in my practice is prolonged sitting. And I get it. A lot of us have desk jobs, or we’re driving long distances, or we’re just spending more time on our phones and our couches than ever before. The problem is, our spines were designed to move. When you sit for long periods of time, the muscles that support your lower back start to fatigue, the discs in your spine get compressed unevenly, and over time, that adds up to discomfort and stiffness.

Here’s what I recommend. Set a timer on your phone for every thirty to forty-five minutes. When it goes off, just stand up. Take a short walk to the kitchen, do a few gentle stretches, or just stand and shift your weight around for a minute or two. That’s it. It sounds too simple, but movement is medicine for your spine. Getting up and moving regularly throughout your day can make a significant difference in how your back feels.

Now let’s talk about your core. And I don’t mean six-pack abs. I mean the deep stabilizing muscles around your spine and your midsection. A lot of people think back pain is a back problem, but often it’s actually a core strength problem. When those deep stabilizing muscles are weak, your spine has to work harder to keep you upright. Over time, that extra strain leads to pain.

The good news is you don’t need a gym membership to strengthen your core. Simple exercises like dead bugs, bird dogs, and modified planks, done consistently just a few days a week, can make a real difference. If you’re not sure where to start, that’s exactly the kind of guidance we provide here at Castle Hills Chiropractic. We can help you find movements that work for your body, without making things worse.

The third thing I want to talk about is sleep position and mattress support. A lot of people don’t realize that the way they sleep can either help or hurt their spine every single night. Sleeping on your stomach, for example, forces your neck to rotate to one side for hours at a time, and that puts a lot of strain on your cervical spine and your lower back. Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under your knees, helps keep your spine in a more neutral position. And if you’re waking up stiff and sore every morning, it may be time to take a honest look at your mattress. A supportive mattress that isn’t too firm and isn’t too soft can make a world of difference.

So what can you start doing today? Number one, get up from your chair every thirty to forty-five minutes and move around. Number two, add a few core strengthening exercises to your weekly routine. Number three, pay attention to how you’re sleeping and make sure your body is supported throughout the night.

These are small changes, but they add up in a big way.

Now, if you’re already dealing with back pain, or if you’ve tried these things and you’re still struggling, that’s a sign that your spine may need a professional evaluation. Pain is your body’s way of asking for help. And the sooner you address it, the better the outcome tends to be.
